Chapter

Sixteen

The heavy chimes continued to echo throughout the room, each one resonating with the threat of impending doom. The room was filled with tension, every eye flickering around the assembled company, searching for an answer, a solution.

I already knew what the solution was, and where—St. Louis Cathedral. It was time to act.

Suddenly, Ethan sprang up abruptly from the couch. “We can’t just sit here. We need a plan.”

“And I have one,” I said quietly. “We need to go to St. Louis Cathedral.”

Ethan looked at me, puzzled. “The one at Jackson Square? Why?”

I couldn’t keep all these secrets anymore, not now. I recounted everything that I remembered about my dream.

Ethan clasped my arm. “It’s too risky for you to go there by yourself.”

“She won’t,” Valentin said. “By the way, do you think all this has anything to do with Jaxon Reyes?”

“Why would you think that?” Ethan asked.

I looked at Ethan. “Jaxon came to talk with the headmaster earlier, wanting him to invoke the Vex of the Heart on Ebony, didn’t he?”

Ethan’s face turned white. “How did you hear this? The headmaster swore him to secrecy.”

Valentin narrowed his eyes. “Why?”

Ethan glanced nervously at the headmaster and then hung his head. “Because he granted his request.”

I couldn’t believe it. “’Why would he do this to Ebony? She’s in love with Gunnar Khan, and he with her.”

“I know.” Ethan sighed heavily. “But the headmaster doesn’t totally trust Gunnar. He believes that Jaxon might play a pivotal role in the coming battle against the Dark Demon King Ryker and the Unseelie King Cormac, and wants to keep him happy.”

I raised an eyebrow. As far as I could see, Jaxon was nothing more than a total asshole. “How would putting the Vex of the Heart on Ebony help in any battle against Ryker and Cormac?”

Ethan fidgeted with the hem of his shirt, shifting from one foot to the other. “The headmaster had a visitor.”

Valentin cocked an eyebrow. “What visitor?”

I thought of Jackson Square and our terrifying experience there. “You’re not saying that the Archangel Michael visited him as well, are you?”

Ethan shook his head slowly. “Not Michael. Raphael.”

I furrowed my brows. “Really? Not the Archangel Michael?”

Professor Eastey gave me a little smirk. “No. Michael’s not big on forgiveness. He would rather just smite Jaxon.”

Ethan exhaled slowly. “In contrast to Michael, The Archangel Raphael is the healer and protector. Raphael told the headmaster that amidst the coming darkness, unexpected allies would emerge, and that Jaxon, despite his flaws, had a crucial role to play. The headmaster was told to place his trust in the unpredictable and the uncertain, as they might just be our salvation.”

“Does the Archangel Michael know this?” I asked.

Professor Eastey shrugged. “I doubt it. It’s no secret that the archangels have a friendly rivalry going. For some reason, the Archangel Raphael really likes poking Michael.”

“Personally, I’d rather poke a great white shark or a grizzly bear,” Ethan mumbled.

“At any rate,” I said, “doesn’t this give us all the more reason to at least question Jaxon? I can’t help but think that he might know something.
